In April, Justin Bieber headlined Coachella for $10 million, dressed in a casual hoodie and only a laptop to accompany him to the main stage. 

Midway through his set, he pulled up Youtube videos of his younger self and harmonized across time. 

The Internet split. One camp called it lazy, and the other called it intimate. Both camps were responding to the apparent absence of production. The lazy camp read it as evidence he didn’t try. The intimate camp read it as evidence of honesty. 

Both were wrong. 

Bieber had spent the previous week running warm-up shows at The Roxy and The Troubadour. The entire SWAG and SWAG II rollout had been built around an aesthetic of stripped-back intimacy. The hoodie, the laptop, the minimal stage, all intentionally designed.

What looked like the least-produced moment of the festival was the most carefully pre-planned moment of his year.
