Universal Film Group, along with Blumhouse Atomic Monster, just landed Obsession Director Curry Barker’s next big hit. The deal is reportedly well into the 8-figure range, all for Barker to script, produce, and direct his next film.
Here’s what truly stands out, the deal was made off a horror movie concept that Barker pitched to the Universal top brass.
Essentially, a former YouTuber walked into one of the most powerful film studios in Hollywood with no completed script and walked out with 8-figures.

Make no mistake. Regardless of how strong an idea is, Universal isn’t handing that kind of money to just anyone. The instant project backing had less to do with the idea and more with Universal’s trust in Barker to deliver.
Obsession is one of the rare films that, for 4-consecutive weeks, has grossed more than its opening weekend. The $750k independent film is on track to surpass $300 million worldwide and has already generated Oscar buzz.
None of this would have been possible if Barker took the conventional route, going through years of film school and waiting for hundreds of people to say yes before finally starting.
Instead, he flipped the script entirely by posting on YouTube and using the internet’s feedback to sharpen his instincts.
That strategy arguably gave him a skill that film school can’t: an intuitive ability to resonate with what viewers actually want to see.
And that’s what Universal is now paying 8-figures for.
For the next Curry Barker, here’s what you need to know:
When done right, the leverage between aspiring directors and big studios can be flipped entirely.
Before, Universal would bear all the risk. They had to take a chance on an aspiring film-school graduate and hope that their gamble lands.
However, studios don’t have to decide your fate anymore. Curry Barker proved that you don’t need a Hollywood budget to create something of genuine quality. All you truly require is commitment, a real idea, and an internet connection.
And if it blows up like Obsession, one day Hollywood might be pitching you 8-figures for something that only exists in your head.
